Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms (1965) and William Walton’s Chichester Service (1974) were commissioned by the Very Reverend Dr Walter Hussey, then Dean of Chichester Cathedral.

Dr Hussey was a great patron of art in the Church of England, commissioning many great choral works including Britten’s ‘Rejoice in the Lamb’ and Finzi’s ‘Lo, the full final sacrifice’, as well as sculptures, paintings and poems from such renowned figures as Henry Moore, Marc Chagall and WH Auden.
