This evensong was the last of the Lent term and includes two works by Herbert Howells (1892-1983). The Westminster Service was composed in 1957 'For the collegiate church of St Peter in Westminster' (Westminster Abbey). The motet Take him, earth, for cherishing was composed in memory of John Fitzgerald Kennedy in 1964.
During the Second World War, while Robin Orr served in the RAF, Howells was appointed Acting Organist of St John's. He later dedicated a setting of the evening canticles to the college.
The commitment, projection and natural energy of this choir have never failed to inspire me
