From the archives, this webcast of Choral Evensong features the first performance of Dum transisset Sabatum by Composer-in-Residence, Michael Finnissy, which was written in response to John Taverner's setting of the same text; also featured in this webcast.
Michael Finnissy (b. 1946) is an English composer and pianist. After winning the William Yeats Hurlstone composition-prize at the Croydon Music Festival, he was awarded Foundation Scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Bernard Stevens and Humphrey Searle. Finnissy has taught at the Royal Academy of Music, the University of Sussex, and is currently Professor of composition at the University of Southampton. Michael Finnissy's last commission for the college choir, John the Baptist, won the Liturgical Category of the British Composer Awards presented by BASCA. Dum transisset Sabatum is one of four choral and five organ works that will be composed during his residency with the college.
