Sir Michael Tippett was an English composer who lived from 1905 to 1998.

In 1962, the College celebrated its 450th anniversary and commissioned Tippett to compose a liturgical work. He settled on the evening canticles text and his Magnificat and Nunc dimittis 'Collegium Sancti Johannis Cantabrigiense' was premiered on 13 March, 1962 by the College Choir under the direction of George Guest. The work prominently features the Trompeta Real stop of the organ which had only recently been added, inspired by organs Guest had encountered on trips to Spain.
