Poulenc finished his Messe en sol majeur in 1937 and dedicated the work to the memory of his father.

Bach's Prelude in E flat major BWV 552i is one of the two largest preludes Bach composed for the organ. Stylistically, the work mixes stately French and concertante Italian elements. The prelude is now often paired with the 'St Anne' fugue also in E flat major, although the works were copied seperately in the 18th century. It was not until the 19th century,on the specific advocacy of Mendelssohn, that the the two pieces were performed in sequence as a pair.
