Recorded on
Sunday, 4 October 2015

The Matriculation Service is the first service that the Choir sing together each year. At the service, all of the new members of College are welcomed before moving to Hall for Matriculation Dinner. This year the Choir welcomes two new undergraduate members of College – Hugh Cutting and Gopal Kambo.

The first termly Cantata Evensong of the year takes place on Saturday 24 October at 6.30 PM and the Choir will be performing two of Bach's Cantatas (no. 83 and no. 109) accompanied by the St John's Sinfonia - the College's resident period instrument ensemble led by College musician-in-residence Margaret Faultless.

Howells' Collegium Regale service was written for the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge and is one of the most celebrated settings of the twentieth century. Before composing the Magnificat, Howells himself wrote  ‘… if I made a setting of the Magnificat, the mighty should be put down from their seat without a brute force which would deny this canticle’s feminine association...Only the Gloria should raise its voice.' This sentiment is clearly demonstrated in this particular setting, if not in all of Howells' Magnificats.

Jonathan Dove's 'Missa Brevis' was commissioned by the Cathedral Organists' Association whilst our current Director of Music, Andrew Nethsingha, was President. Jonathan Dove has composed in a variety of different genres although his most well-known works tend to be vocal.
