Parry’s six ‘Songs of Farewell’ were written between 1916-18 towards the end of his life. ‘My soul, there is a country’ is the first of the set and one of the most regularly performed.

Herbert Sumsion (1899-1995) was known primarily as a cathedral musician and was Organist of Gloucester Cathedral from 1928-67. He was a significant figure within the Three Choirs Festval, through which he maintained relationships with Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Howells and Finzi.
